Jesus spoke metaphorically at times. But in John 14:6, there was a clear message. When the disciple Thomas questioned how they would know the way, Jesus stated: “ I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” Before reading the text fully, I often questioned why Jesus had to explain who he was to his disciples. I mean, hadn’t they walk with him all this time? Then I realized that the verse wasn’t necessarily a description of who he was, but the verse possibly served as a guide in preparing for his departure, almost a warning. It was something about the way Jesus expressed himself as the truth that stood out to me. Finding the truth is so important, during a time when everything around us seems to be a lie. Deceitfulness is at an all-time high. We live in a time of catfishing and fraud, doctored documents and false information, physical changes done with surgery masked as natural appearances, or even with a swipe of an app on one’s phone. Boundaries of biblical foundations and practices are often blurred by those who heavily influence the culture. It makes you wonder, where is the truth? What is true? I think Jesus answered that question. He explains he is the truth because he knows that everything around us is a lie. Everything that we see is a lie, but the enemy would like us to think otherwise. The enemy would like us to think that sin, or any practice that is against God is the way. But Jesus steps in with clarity. His words, “I am the way, the truth, and the life,” gives us great comfort. Jesus is the way to eternal life, he is the way to true joy. He is a true and pure way. In him we find life. Not in things of this world such as our jobs, people, or money. Our life begins and ends in Christ. Through him, we have everything we need and beyond what could imagine if we surrender to him. He is the way.
“Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God[a]; believe also in me. 2 My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.”
5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you really know me, you will know[b] my Father as well.” John 14:1-7 NIV
